History Of Madison Square Garden – New York

Madison Square Garden takes its name from the 4th President of the United States, James Madison. Also known as MSG or The Garden, the arena sits above Pennsylvania Station in Midtown Manhattan between Seventh and Eighth Avenues from 31st to 33rd Streets. 

The original Madison Square Garden opened on Madison Square in 1879, making it the oldest major sporting venue in the New York metropolitan area. It then moved to a new location nearby in 1890, before the third version of Madison Square Garden opened at Eighth Avenue and 50th Street in 1925.

The Madison Square Garden you see today is the fourth Garden, which opened its doors for the first time in February 1968. The overground part of the original Penn Station was demolished to make room for the new arena, a controversial decision that sparked a public outcry. 

A recent renovation between 2013 and 2016 improved Madison Square Garden’s amenities, entertainment, and refreshment facilities. It also completely refurbished the interior of the main arena while preserving the famous Madison Square Garden ceiling. 

Madison Square Garden is the oldest NBA venue and the second-oldest NHL venue. The arena’s seating capacity is 19,812 for Knicks games and 18,006 for Rangers games. Baseline Floor Seats (Knicks)

Floor sections have some of the most highly demanded seats for a Knicks Game at Madison Square Garden. However, seats in low rows have a poor view obstructed by the basket, and the shallow elevation in the lower bowl means you could struggle to see the court properly from seats in rows 10+.

Standard floor seats may start at prices from $500 towards the back and $1000+ for seats near the front of the section. You’ll get a better view for a similar price from 100-Level Center seats. 

100 Level Center (Knicks)

Standard seats in 100 Level Center sections are much cheaper than the premium seats in front of them. They also offer a better view of the entire court from a slightly elevated position, making these some of the best seats for a Knicks game. 

Choose sections 105 or 106 if you want to sit behind the Knicks bench and sections 108 or 109 to sit behind the visiting team’s bench. If you’re considering tickets in sections 116-118, bear in mind that the Event Level Suites take up the front part of these sections, and the standard seats start at Row 6. 

NBA tickets on the 100 Level Sideline will likely start at around $400-500 at the back of the section and $800-1000 in the front rows.

100 Level Corner (Knicks)

Corner sections have up to 23 rows and offer good angled views of the court, especially if you choose higher rows. The concourse tunnels are at the top of the section, so choosing rows 15+ will give you a better view and easier access to the concourse.

Expect to pay prices starting from $200-300 for seats for a Knicks game in this location.

100 Level Baseline (Knicks)

Baseline seats on the 100 have a view from behind the basket. However, their slightly elevated position makes it easier to see over the people sitting in front of you, resulting in a better view than Floor seats.

Each Baseline section has 15 rows labeled Row 6 to Row 20. The concourse entrance is at the back of the section, so choose higher rows for quicker trips to the concessions and restrooms.

Knicks tickets in this location start from around $175-300.

100 Level Center (Rangers)

100 Level Center seating takes up sections 106-108 and 116-118 for Rangers games at Madison Square Garden. This location will give you a good view across the whole of the ice. 

The Event Level suites are in front of sections 116-118, so there are around 10 rows of suite seating in front of the 100 Level Center sections. 

Choosing sections 106-107 will place you right behind the Rangers bench, while visiting fans should choose sections 107-108 to be behind their team’s bench. 

Seats for a Rangers game in this location are likely to cost from $800-1000+ for seats near the front of the section and $600-800 further back.

100 Level Corner (Rangers)

This location provides a great view of puck battles in the nearest corner of the ice, however, premium rinkside seating takes up the first row of seats

Seats in Rows 8 and under will view the ice through the glass partition. Sitting in rows 9 and above means you’ll be looking over or through the glass depending on where the action is, which some people find distracting. 

The Rangers shoot twice towards sections 109-110 and 114-115.

Buying NHL tickets in this location will likely cost from $400-500 in the rear of the section, rising to $700-900 for the front rows.

100 Level Goal (Rangers)

Each end section on the 100 Level has 15 rows of seats numbered Row 6 to Row 20. You’ll watch through the glass when the action reaches your end of the ice and above the glass when it moves to the opposite end.

These are the cheapest 100-Level seats for a Rangers game. You won’t see action at the far end of the ice so well, but you’ll have a great view of goals scored right in front of you.

Rangers shoot twice towards sections 111-113, making these seats popular with Rangers fans. 

Tickets in this location are likely to cost from $300-500, so they’re a good value option for watching a Rangers game from the lower deck.

200 Level Side Sections

Choosing lower rows in 200 Level side sections will give you some of the best views of a Knicks or Rangers game, while seats at the back are some of the cheapest Madison Square Garden tickets. 

Side sections on the 200 Level are large sections with up to 25 rows of seats, including a row of barstool seating in the final row. Choosing seats in rows 1-6 will give you the best views and easy access to the entrance tunnel at row 7. 

The front rows in these sections will give you amazing club-style views of Knicks and Rangers games. The first row of every section in this area also has a TV monitor displaying stats and replays. 

Depending on the row, seats along the side of the 200 Level are likely to start from $250-500 for Rangers games and $150-250 for Knicks games. 

200 Level End Sections

Sections at the end of the 200 Level don’t have as good a view as sideline seats, but with just 3-6 rows of seats, accessing your seat can be much easier. 

Seats at the front of the section have a TV showing replays and stats to help you keep in touch with the action. Most 200 Level end sections have bar stool seats in the back row.

Rangers fans may prefer seats in sections 215-220, as their team will shoot twice towards these sections. 

If you’re buying 200 Level End Section tickets, expect to pay prices starting from $250 for Rangers games and $200-220 for Knicks games. 

200 Level Standing Room Only (Knicks Only)

Madison Square Garden has a large Standing Room Only area behind section 204 for Knicks games. These tickets are only made available once all seats for a game have been sold. 

SRO tickets can be an affordable way to watch the Knicks, but these tickets don’t include a seat. Standing spots are available on a first-come-first-served place, and you could lose your spot if you visit the concessions or restrooms.

300 Level Balcony Seats

Balcony Seats are located on the Chase Bridge level between the Chase Bridge Seats. From there, you’ll enjoy a unique bird’s eye view of your event, looking down on the ice or court. The seats don’t feel precarious, but not everyone enjoys this unusual perspective. 

Sections 301-309 are in the East Balcony (also known as The Lounges), and sections 317-323 are called the West Balcony seats. These sections have just two rows of oversized and padded seats with a row of barstools behind them. 

Seats in The Lounges are usually sold in group packages but may be available on a single-ticket basis. These seats often include refreshments from a pre-set menu, but check this when purchasing.

300 Level Chase Bridge Seats

Chase Bridge seats are also located on the Chase Bridge Level. Sections 310-316 are known as the North Bridge, and sections 324-328 are known as the South Bridge. Part of the South Bridge is converted into the media deck for sporting events at Madison Square Garden.

These sections share the same seating arrangement and unusual seat views as the Balcony Seats. Refreshments aren’t included in the ticket price, but there’s easy access to food and drink concessions nearby.

400 Level Blue Seats

400 Level seating at Madison Square Garden is known as the Blue Seats and offers some of the cheapest tickets for a Knicks game or Rangers game. Each section has no more than 7 rows, but there are restricted views from seats in rows 5+. 

Rangers will shoot twice towards these seats, but sitting on the top tier of Madison Square Garden means your view won’t be great. However, the most diehard fans tend to sit in top deck sections, so the cheap price and atmosphere could make up for the views.

Driving in Midtown Manhattan can be very slow, so traveling by public transportation is recommended.

Arriving by Public Transportation

The easiest way to reach Madison Square Garden by public transportation is to take one of the following trains to 34th Street/Penn Station:

When To Arrive For A New York Knicks or New York Rangers Game
