History Of Capital One Arena
Capital One Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in the Penn Quarter of Washington, D.C. It’s home of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association (NBA), who were previously known as the Washington Bullets. Before the arena opened, the Wizards and Capitals both played at USAir Arena in Landover, Maryland.
Capital One Arena also hosts the Georgetown Hoyas, Georgetown University’s men’s basketball team, and hosted the Washington Mystics of the WNBA between 1998 and 2018.
Work began on the arena in October 1995, and it opened under its original name, the MCI Center, on December 2, 1997. The first event held in the new venue was a basketball game between the Wizards and the Seattle SuperSonics.
In 2006, the venue changed its name to the Verizon Center. It took on its current name in August 2017, when naming rights were sold to the bank Capital One. The maximum seating capacity at Capital One Arena is 18,506 for Capitals games and 20,356 for Wizards games.

100 Level Side (Washington Wizards)
100 Level Side sections offer some of the best standard tickets for the Washington Wizards. The sightlines here let you watch the game develop across the entire court.
You might be tempted to choose the first rows of standard seats behind the premium courtside seats. You’ll be close to the action there, but you’ll get a better view of the whole court by choosing seats further back in the section. These seats are also closer to the entrance tunnel, making trips to the restrooms and concessions easier.
Section 101 is behind the Washington Wizards’ home bench and the visiting team bench is in front of section 121.
Tickets in this area start at around $300 for standard seats at the front of the section and around $175 for seats further back.
100 Level Corner (Washington Wizards)
Lower Level Corner sections at Capital One Arena offer dramatically different experiences, so you need to choose your seats carefully.
If your top priority is proximity to the players, the first few rows of Corner sections 104, and 118 will give you a good view of the player benches. However, you won’t be able to see the other end of the court very well.
Avoid the front rows of corner sections 103, 108, 114, and 119 if you want to be close to the hardwood. The design of the arena means these rows feel like they’re about 10 rows from the court.
You’ll get a better view of the game from higher rows in Corner sections. The rows are pretty small, so accessing your seat will be easy, and you’ll also be closer to the main concourse.
Expect to pay around $80 for seats at the back of these corner sections and around $100 for seats at the front.
100 Level End (Washington Wizards)
100 Level sections on the baseline usually offer the cheapest Lower Level seats for a Wizards game.
However, the basket will obstruct your view, and you could be further from the court than you expect. The first row of standard seating is more than 10 rows from the court, with several rows of premium seating in front of them.
Choosing rows further back in the section and seats located closer to the corner will give you an angled and elevated view that reduces the obstruction to your view.
Rows U-Z are separated from the rest of the section by the entrance tunnel and a small set of stairs. Choosing row U means you’ll have easy access to the concourse and no one sitting directly in front of you.
Seats at the front of these sections start at around $80, while seats in rows U-Z could cost as little as $52.
100 Level Side (Washington Capitals)
100 Level seats along the side of the rink are some of the best seats for a Washington Capitals game. This location will give you an excellent view across the whole of the ice, and sitting further back avoids your view being disrupted by the safety glass.
In most 100 Level sections, rows A-C are occupied by premium seats, so the first standard seating is in row D. The exception to this is in sections 100, 101, 111, and 121, where the front row of standard seating is behind the player benches or penalty box.
Sitting directly behind the penalty box and benches will give you a great view of your favorite players, but they’ll partly block your view of the ice.

100 Level Corner (Washington Capitals)
Standard 100 Level Corner sections are a more affordable alternative to sitting at center ice for a Washington Capitals game.
Sitting in the lower rows will give you a great view of puck battles in your corner of the ice, but the glass can distort your view. Choose corner sections angled down the ice, such as section 108, for a more comfortable viewing angle than from sections angled across the ice.

If you sit in the lower rows, you’ll watch the game through the glass, and your view could be distorted. However, you might feel that sitting so close to the ice and your favorite players makes it worthwhile.
Sitting towards the back of the section will give you a clearer view and easier access to the concourse.

Capital One Arena is an entirely cashless venue, and only payments by credit cards, debit cards, or contactless methods will be accepted. Discounts may be available at the team store and concession stands if you pay using a Capital One credit card.
You can load cash onto a prepaid debit card using one of the Reverse ATMs next to Guest Services on the 100 and 400 Levels.
Regular ATMS are also available at sections 119, 400, and 420.
Bag Policy
Capital One Arena has a strict ‘no bag’ policy, and only wallet-size clutches measuring less than 5” x 7” may be taken into the arena. No bags, purses, or backpacks of any size will be allowed into the arena.
An exception is made for parenting bags and medical bags, which must be no larger than 14” x 14” x 6”. These should be taken into the arena at the Capital One Cardholder Entrance on the corner of 6th and F Street.
Any bags taken into Capital One Arena will be subject to security screening, and there are no facilities at the venue for storing prohibited bags or items.
You may also take one empty plastic water bottle into the venue, but no outside food or beverages are permitted.
Tailgating
Grilling, open flames, preparing food, and consuming alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in the Lexus Garage at Capital One Arena.
