History Of Northwest Stadium

Northwest Stadium is an American football stadium in Landover, Maryland, around 5 miles to the east of Washington, D.C. It’s the home field of the National Football League’s Washington Commanders and one of the major sports venues in Washington, D.C., which also includes Capital One Arena, home of the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals.

The Commanders’ new home stadium was initially named the Jack Kent Cooke Stadium and was built to replace the Commander’s previous home, RFK Stadium. It opened on September 14, 1997, with a 19-13 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

The stadium was named FedEx Field between 1999 and 2024. After that, it was briefly named Commanders Field until August 2024 when Northwest Federal Credit Union acquired the naming rights to the stadium.

Between 2004 and 2010, Northwest Stadium was the NFL’s largest stadium, with a highest seating capacity of 91,000. It now has a maximum capacity of 62,000.

As well as hosting Washington Commanders games, Northwest Stadium also hosts the annual Prince George’s Classic college football game. It has also hosted several other sporting events including college football games, soccer games, and live music concerts by major artists, including U2, the Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé.

Standard Seating at Northwest Stadium

The prices below are example seat prices for regular season NFL games. You can buy NFL tickets for Commanders games directly from the Washington Commanders’ official website or from secondary market websites such as Ticketmaster and StubHub. 

Prices will vary between events, and ticket prices may be cheaper if you are buying for preseason games.

100 Level

Lower Level sections have great views that are generally free from obstructions and within 30 rows of the field. However, the views from seats closer to the front of sideline sections might be obstructed by players and team staff standing on the sideline. 

100 Level Sideline 

You’ll find the best standard seats for a Washington Commanders game in the Lower Level sideline sections.

Just behind the premium Dream Seats are standard seats with some of the closest views of the action. However, choosing seats a few rows further back will give you a better sightline over the players standing on the field.

The Commanders sideline runs in front of sections 101-105 and 138-142, while the visitors sideline is in front of sections 117-126. 

These sections have the most expensive standard Commanders tickets. Front-row tickets on the 50-yard line will often start at around $1000+, but you can get cheaper tickets by choosing seats further back, where they cost around $400-600. You’ll also be closer to the amenities on the Lower Level concourse.

Choosing seats in sections around the 20-yard line gives a more affordable sideline option. You’ll still get a great view of the action, but front-row tickets cost around $500-600, and you could pay as little as $300 for seats further back. 

100 Level Corner 

Lower Level Corner seats offer a unique view of the game as you can track the action as the ball moves both along and across the field. 

You can also get a great view of your team running onto the field by booking seats in Sections 106 and 109 for the home team tunnel, or sections 113 and 114 for the visitors’ tunnel. 

Ticket prices in Lower Level corner sections are around $500 for rows at the front of the section. The smaller sections set further back from the field have cheaper tickets, often around $200. 

Seats near the tunnels are likely to be more expensive, and you could see prices around the $1000 level.

100 Level End Zone 

Lower Level end zone sections are located at both ends of the field and give you great views of scoring plays in the near end zone. Seats at the top of end zone sections 109-113 are also close to the concourse and Fan Zone Pavilion. 

You might find that your view is slightly obstructed by the uprights, but you can still catch the action on the stadium’s giant video boards. 

Tickets in 100 Level End Zone sections cost around $700-800 for front rows and $200-300 for rows further back. 

200 Level

Standard seating runs around most of Northwest Stadium’s second tier apart from the end zones. 

The front 8 rows in 200 Level Sideline sections offer some of the best views at Northwest Stadium. These seats are pretty close to the field and at $500-600, they’re more affordable than many 100 Level sideline sections.

However, some of the worst views at Northwest Stadium are also found on the 200 Level. Seats higher than row 8 have obstructed views due to the support pillars and the overhang from the tier above. 

The view gets worse as you move further back in the sections, and by row 14, the view is severely restricted. 

The ticket prices in this area start at around $200-300. At those prices, you can find a much better view and gameday experience in other areas of the stadium.

400 Level

The top level of Northwest Stadium is a great place to find cheap tickets for Commanders games or another Northwest Stadium event like a soccer game or concert.

400 Level Sideline 

400 Level Sideline sections offer the best tickets on the stadium’s upper tier. Seats in the front few rows give you a clear view of the entire field, making them a good alternative to the expensive seats in the lower level sideline sections.

However, these are large sections with up to 30 rows and an entrance tunnel near the bottom of the section. Seats higher up will be cheaper, but you’ll have a long walk up the steeply-sloping upper deck.

Upper Level Sideline sections are excellent value, with prices starting at $200-300 for front-row seats. If you’re happy to climb to the higher rows, you can find seats for around $150-200.

400 Level Corner 

Upper deck corner sections offer some of the best value seats at Northwest Stadium. They have fewer rows than sideline sections, sometimes just 5 or 6 rows, so you can get to and from your seat easily.

The seating enjoys good angles towards midfield, and the front rows are a great value option for watching a Commanders game. 

Tickets here start at around $200.

400 Level End Zone

400 Level End Zone sections are also pretty small, with around 6-8 rows in each. If you choose tickets in the front few rows, you’ll have a decent view of the action in the near end zone, but you might struggle to see plays at the opposite end of the field.

Luckily, these sections also have good views of the video board above the opposite end zone.

Tickets in this area can start at around $75-100, depending on the row you choose.

400 Level Standing Room Only 

Standing Room Only (SRO) sections are located behind the end zones on the stadium’s upper deck. There are 4 tiers in each section, with row 8 in the first tier, Rows 9 and 10 in tier 2, Rows 11 and 12 in tier 3, and Rows 13 and 14 in the top tier.

The front row has a railing to lean on, and all the rest also have a narrow ledge where you can put your refreshments.

These tickets are an affordable way to watch a Commanders game, but remember, they don’t include seats. Spots in the SRO area are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis, and you could lose your place if you visit the restrooms or concessions. 

However, SRO tickets are a great option if you like socializing while you watch the game, and there’s a great atmosphere in this area.

Accessible Seating

Accessible seating at Northwest Stadium is limited, so call ahead or arrive early for best availability. Accessible seats are available on a first-come-first-served basis and aren’t guaranteed. 

If you are a season ticket holder or have purchased tickets from the Washington Commanders site, you can call the ticket office to request relocation to accessible seats. Tickets purchased through secondary market websites can only be relocated by visiting Guest Services on the day of the game. 

Escalators and elevators provide access to all levels of the stadium, and ADA-compliant public ramps are also available. Guests with accessibility elevators can take one companion with them on the elevators. 

Accessible facilities are available in all public restrooms at Northwest Stadium.

Restricted View Seating

Avoid rows 14 and higher in sections on the north side of the 200 Level. 

The upper deck overhangs the rear of sections 213-230, with the view getting worse as you move closer to the back of the section. There are also several support pillars that can block your view of long passes and kicks.

The Dream Seats get you as close as possible to the visiting team sideline, but more affordable options are available.

Lower Level sideline sections 120-123 also offer good views of your favorite team’s sideline, but sections 117-119 and 124-126 are cheaper.

Sections 212-215 and 219-222 also give you a good view down the visitors’ sideline from nearer the 20-yard line. Sit closer to the front to avoid an obstructed view.

If you’d prefer to sit near the player tunnel, sections 113-114 are located on either side of the tunnel itself. Lower rows will get you close to your team as they run onto the field.

The Pepsi Fan district can be found between sections 109-113 on the Main Concourse at the stadium’s west end.

Transportation And Parking At A Washington Commanders Home Game

Northwest Stadium is located at 1600 Ring Road, Landover, MD 20785.

If you plan to drive to the stadium, the directions vary depending on your set-off point and the parking lot you booked. You’ll find full driving instructions from Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Howard, Montgomery, and Anne Arundel Counties on the Washington Commanders website.

Parking at Northwest Stadium

You can buy single-game parking for a Washington Commanders game online ahead of your visit. Your parking permit must be displayed at all times and will indicate the designated roadway that you must use to access the lot. 

Accessible parking spots are available at the locations marked on the parking map. Visitors must have a valid state-issued disability parking permit or license plate and should purchase a Burgundy, Gold, or Black parking pass as required. 

Accessible parking is also available in the Gray Lot off Brightseat Road. This parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis for visitors with a valid state-issued disability parking placard or license plate.

Arriving by Public Transportation

The Metrorail system offers an easy way to travel to Northwest Stadium. Take the Blue or Silver lines to Morgan Boulevard Metro Station, less than 1 mile from the stadium on Garrett Morgan Boulevard.

The location for rideshare pick-ups and drop-offs is in the Red Zone Lot. You should enter 8001 Sheriff Rd, Hyattsville, MD 20785, as your destination address for the Rideshare Lot, which is around a 5-minute walk from the stadium. 

You can also use this location if you are being dropped off or collected by a taxi or private car. 

When To Arrive For A Washington Commanders Game

All stadium gates open 2 hours before kickoff except the gates at SeatGeek Legends Plaza and Merrill Lynch Touchdown Club, which open 3 hours before the game.

If you want to tailgate before the game, the Red Zone parking lot opens 5 hours ahead of the game, and all other parking lots open 4 hours before kickoff.

Logistics at Northwest Stadium

Contactless Entry

Washington Commanders use digital ticketing to speed up your entry to Northwest Stadium. Before your visit, you should ensure that every adult has installed the Washington Commanders App on their mobile device and downloaded their ticket. Printed copies and screenshots are not acceptable.

Cashless Payments

Northwest Stadium is a fully cashless stadium. All purchases must be made using debit or credit cards or a mobile payment app such as Google Wallet or Apple Pay. 

You can also pay for refreshments using the Commanders Mobile Pay app, which makes purchasing concessions quicker and easier.

Bag Policy

Like other NFL stadiums, Northwest Stadium has a clear bag policy that limits the size and style of bags you can take into the stadium. 

You can take 1 clear plastic, PVC, or vinyl bag that doesn’t exceed 12” x 6” x 12” or a 1-gallon clear plastic food storage bag such as a Ziploc bag into the venue.

Small clutch bags can also be carried into the stadium along with your clear bag. This bag should be no bigger than 4.5” x 6.5”, and may optionally have a strap or handle.

No other bags will be permitted, including fanny packs, cinch bags, or backpacks. You can see a complete list of prohibited items on the Northwest Stadium website. Exceptions may be made for medically necessary items after a full inspection.

Tailgating

You can tailgate in all parking lots except Reserved Lots, lots reserved for staff and team personnel, and the H-Burgundy Park-and-Go parking lot.

The Red Zone parking lot opens 5 hours before kickoff, and all other parking lots at Northwest Stadium open 4 hours before the game’s start time. You must finish tailgating by the game’s scheduled start time.

Standard tailgating guidelines should be followed, such as keeping aisles clear and ensuring your car and equipment only take up one parking space. All grills and flames must be extinguished before you enter Northwest Stadium.
