History Of Empower Field at Mile High

Empower Field at Mile High is an American football stadium and home to the Denver Broncos of the NFL (National Football League). Work started on the new stadium in 1999, and it opened in 2001, replacing the Broncos’ former home, the Mile High Stadium. The stadium has a distinctive horseshoe shape with an open south end on the 300, 400, and 500 Levels. 

The stadium was previously known under various names, including Broncos Stadium at Mile High, Invesco Field at Mile High, and Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Football fans might know it better as Mile High or New Mile High, while some Broncos fans still call it the Mile High Stadium.

The stadium’s nickname comes from its altitude of 1 mile (5,280 feet or 1,610 meters) above sea level. The difficulty of playing at this higher elevation gives the Denver Broncos an extra advantage over visiting teams, which is compounded by the notoriously raucous fans, especially those in the South Stands. Broncos fans create an intimidating noise known as the “Rocky Mountain Thunder” by stamping on the stadium’s steel tread risers.

The Broncos played their first regular season game in their new home on September 10, 2001, with a 31–20 win over the New York Giants.

More than $100 million of upgrades were announced in 2022 including a new video scoreboard which is the 5th largest video board in the NFL. Despite these and other upgrades, including seating updates, Empower Field at Mile High was not selected as a venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Standard Seating at Empower Field at Mile High

Empower Field at Mile High has standard seating sections throughout the 100 and 500 Levels as well as additional end zone sections on the Plaza Level and 300 Level.

2000 half-price tickets are made available for every Denver Broncos home game with a limit of 4 tickets per household. These discounted NFL tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.

100 Level

100 Level sections are closest to the field and may also be known as field level seats or lower level seats. Most of these lower sections have 40 rows of seats arranged in two tiers with a section tunnel near row 21. 

Lower Level Sideline

Lower Level sideline sections have 40 rows of seats. Rows 1-20 in the lower tier are as close to the field as you can get, while the upper seating tier has some of the best views in the stadium. 

Lower Level sideline seats at midfield will offer the best view of the action, however sitting too close to the field can mean your view is obstructed by players on the sideline. On the other hand, if you sit just above the entrance tunnel, you might be distracted by spectators heading to and from the concourse.

Lower Level Corner

The Broncos side enters the field through the tunnel between sections 134 and 135, while sections 115 and 116 are on either side of the visiting team tunnel. These sections are very popular and get crowded at the start and end of the game. 

Ticket prices for the front row of lower level end zone sections can range from $500 to $1000 on the secondary market. You’ll find seats further back available at prices around $200-300, making them a great value option for a Broncos game. 

Plaza Level End Zone

The Plaza Level at Empower Field covers sections 228-236 above the south end zone. These sections have up to 33 rows of seating with the entrance at the bottom of the section.

These sections don’t have great access to amenities or fantastic views. There’s also no cover, making them some of the coldest seats in the stadium. 

Prices here start around $150, so they’re some of the cheapest seats at Mile High Stadium. However, for that price you can get a better view of the whole field and a more enjoyable game day experience from the upper deck sideline or lower level corner sections.

300 Level End Zone

300 Level Endzone seating covers sections 316-330 behind the north end zone. Each section has 19 rows of seating with the entrance at row 5. 

These seats give you a great view of the field, and you’ll be able to see the large video board at the south end of the field. Choose rows 10 and above to enjoy the shelter of the overhang.

You can find tickets in this elevated position starting at around $150-200 at the back of the section, rising to $350-400 in the front rows. 

500 Level

The upper deck at Empower Field at Mile High offers the cheapest tickets for a Broncos game. There’s a big variation in views between the front and back of the section, which is reflected in the ticket pricing. 

These sections have up to 35 rows, and choosing tickets in rows 20 and higher will save you money. On the other hand, you’ll have a longer walk to your seat, and the view won’t be as good as from the lower rows. 

Sitting on the top deck of the stadium will also expose you to the elements. Pick the west side of the stadium if you want to see shade sooner.

Upper Level Sideline

The Level 500 sideline has massive sections that have up to 36 rows of seating, with the entrance located near rows 4 or 7. The sections slope steeply so you’ll face a walk up steep steps to the high rows. If you’re not keen on heights or have difficulty with stairs, it’s better to pick seats in the lower half of the section. 

Choosing seats in the lower rows will give you an excellent view of the game that’s similar to the premium seats on the club level below you. Sections 507-509 and 533-535 in midfield make an affordable alternative to the more expensive 100 Level sideline sections.

Upper Level Corner

Although the upper tier of Empower Field isn’t a full bowl, there are seating sections at all four corners. Picking the right corner will make a big difference to your Broncos experience.

Parking at Empower Field at Mile High

There are around 6500 onsite parking spaces at Empower Field at Mile High. On Denver Broncos home game days, onsite stadium lots are reserved for season ticket holders. A limited number of parking spaces are available on a first-come-first-served basis. 

If you’re unable to park in the stadium parking lots, there are a further 15000 spaces in independent parking lots in the surrounding area. Parking in neighborhood streets is prohibited, and vehicles will be ticketed and towed. 

ADA parking permits are available on a first-come-first-served basis from Lot L or the ADA sections in Lots D or G. Payment can be made by credit cards, and ADA spaces are only available to drivers displaying a valid state-issued ADA parking placard or registration.

Arriving by Public Transportation

Public transportation offers a convenient way to get to and from Empower Field at Mile High.

The E and W Light rail lines call at the Empower Field at Mile High Station, less than a 10-minute walk from the stadium. Alternatively, the West Corridor Line light rail service stops at the Decatur Federal station, 8 minutes from the stadium on foot.

The Denver Trolley’s Football Shuttle service operates for Broncos home games, commencing two hours before kickoff. The service terminates at the Broncos Bridge Trolley stop about 3 minutes from the stadium’s east side. You can buy tickets onboard the trolley. Return journeys commence at the start of the 4th quarter and run until half an hour after the game’s end.

Ridesharing arrangements

The rideshare pickup and dropoff location is at the Ball Arena 4Runner West Parking Lot on the corner of 5th Street and Walnut Street.

If you’re being dropped off by a taxi or private car, you can use the Lot L loop between Gates 4 and 5. Let the attendant know that guests are being dropped off.

Tailgating

Tailgating is permitted in the parking lots at Empower Field at Mile High except in the B-Valet and the carpool section in Lot A.

You should observe the Tailgating Rules and Regulations such as not taking up additional parking spaces with your equipment and keeping the drive aisles and file lanes clear. All tailgating must be completed no later than 60 minutes before kickoff, and all equipment must be cleared away before you enter the stadium.
