A Primer on Rate Field

Rate Field is a baseball stadium located on the south side of Chicago and the current ballpark of the MLB’s Chicago White Sox. It was the last of the “cookie-cutter” ballparks built before Oriole Park at Camden Yards inspired a wave of “retro-classic” ballparks in the 1990s and 2000s.

Chicago has two Major League Baseball teams: the White Sox and the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs’ home venue, Wrigley Field, is around 10 miles north of Rate Field in Chicago’s North Side. Chicago White Sox fans are often known as “South Siders”, as a reference to their ballpark’s location in Chicago’s South Side.

Other major sports venues near Rate Field include United Center, home to the Chicago Bulls (NBA) and Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), and Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears (NFL).

The name of this iconic ballpark was Comiskey Park II when it first opened in 1991. It was built opposite the original Comiskey Park, which had been the home of the White Sox since 1910 and was demolished to make space for a parking lot.

Standard seating is available on the 100 and 500 Levels of the Rate Field seating chart. Bleacher seating is also available in select 100 Level sections.

Lower Box Seats

Lower Box seats in Lower Level sections 111-153 are the best standard seating option if you want to get close to the action at Rate Field. 

Most of these sections have 35-38 rows of seating, and fewer than 10 seats per row. Choosing seats further back will give you a slightly elevated view of the game and you’ll also enjoy some shade from the Club Level overhang. However, seats too far back may have their view of home plate obstructed by railings.

Seats in lower level sections 119-145 have various names including Diamond Box, Platinum Box and Gold Box. There’s no difference between these seat designations apart from the price, location, and seat views.

The premium Scout Seats occupy the front 12-15 rows of sections 130-134 behind home plate. The first row of standard seating will carry row number 13-16 depending on the section.

The Sox dugout is in front of sections 137-142, and sections 122-127 are in front of the visitors dugout. The first row of seats in these sections is row 5, directly behind the dugouts.

Seats in rows 1-10 (where available) start at $96, and the seats in the rows behind start at $75. Seats in the back half of these sections start at $64.

Sections 108-118 and 146-153 are Lower Box or Lower Box Corner sections. Again, there’s no difference between these designations apart from their location and ticket price.

Seats in section 109 may have obstructed views. 

Seats down the line can have uncomfortable angles towards home plate, especially as you get closer to the outfield. Choosing seats in higher rows will give you a more comfortable view and easier access to the concourse. 

Tickets for sections 114-118 and 146-150 start at $46 for the front rows and $40 for rows in the back half of the section. 

Seats in sections 108-113 and 151-153 start at $35 at the front of the section and $30 further back. 

Lower Level Outfield 

100 Level Outfield seats are the cheapest field-level tickets for a White Sox game. Sections 160-164 are bleacher seats, and the remaining outfield sections are designated as Outfield Reserved.

Although these sections have the most distant views on the lower level, there are some advantages to sitting here. You’ll have easy access to the Main Level concourse, and the Old Comiskey Park shower near section 161 offers a way for fans to cool down on hot summer days.

If you’d like to watch your team warming up, sections 157-158 are in front of the White Sox bullpen, but the foul pole may obstruct lower number seats. Sections 104-105 are in front of the visiting team’s bullpen. Row 8 or 9 will be the first row directly behind each bullpen.

The bullpens are in the part of the field that sees most home runs. Choose sections 103 and 159 for the best chance of catching a home run ball. 

Outfield sections have less shade than any other area of Rate Field. You’ll also find it hard to see the action from sections 100-101, as the Fan Deck and outfield fence will obstruct your view. 

Outfield Reserved seats start at $25-$32 depending on your seating location.

Bleacher Seats

Bleacher seats are available in center field sections 160-164. 

These traditional metal bleachers aren’t the most comfortable seats for a White Sox game, especially on a hot sunny day, and there’s very little shade. You’ll also find it hard to see the action from sections 163 and 164 as the Fan Deck and outfield fence will partly obstruct your view. 

However, bleachers are some of the most affordable White Sox tickets, and this part of the ballpark usually has a fun atmosphere. You’ll also have easy access to the Field Level amenities and concessions. 

Bleacher Seats at Rate Field start at $26-$29 depending on your choice of seating row.

Upper Box 

Upper Box Seats at Rate Field are located on the top deck in sections 522-542. Seats in these sections have elevated views of the action from the infield and behind home plate. Sections 522-526 also offer a fantastic head-on view of the fireworks.

Views from the front row of an upper section are better than further back, but shorter fans might have their view obstructed by the safety railing.

The top deck at Rate Field slopes steeply, so avoid seats above row 8 if you don’t like heights or steep stairs. However, the upper rows enjoy more shade, especially on the first-base side of the ballpark.

Seats in the front 5 rows of some sections are designated Premium Upper Box seats, but these don’t receive any additional perks or benefits. 

Upper Box seats start at $26 for seats in the front rows and $17 further back in the sections. 

Upper Reserved

You’ll find the cheapest tickets for a White Sox game in Upper Reserved sections. These are located in sections 502-520 and 554-558 on the upper deck at Rate Field. 

Sections 516-520 and 544-548 have similar views to the more expensive Upper Box seats, so they’re a good choice for Sox fans on a budget. You’ll also get a great view of the fireworks from sections 516-520.

Sections 506-508 and 556-558 are well-angled towards home plate but these seats have the most distant views of the field. Roof structures or the foul pole may also obstruct your view.

If avoiding the sun is a priority, 500-level seats high up on the first base side are some of the first to see shade at Rate Field. 

Upper Reserved seats start at $13-$15 for the sections closer to Upper Box sections. Seat prices in sections nearer the outfield could be as low as $9, making them the cheapest seats for a White Sox game.

Standing Room Only (SRO)

Standing Room Only tickets are occasionally available in very limited numbers for sold-out games at Rate Field. 

These are a great value option for watching the White Sox, but you won’t have access to a seat. Standing spaces are available on a first-come-first-served basis and you could lose your spot if you visit the restrooms or concessions.

Accessible Seating

ADA accessible seating is available on all levels at Rate Field including the Suite Level. These include wheelchair accessible spaces and sight-line accessible seating. Additional companion seating may also be purchased, subject to availability. 

All levels of the ballpark are connected by elevators at Gate 5 and behind home plate. Escalators are also available at Gates 3 and 5.

The bleacher seat sections 160-164 have a family-friendly atmosphere during a day game which turns into a party atmosphere as the evening progresses. These seats start at $26-$29 but remember that your ticket gives you access to a metal bleacher-style seat that won’t be as comfortable as regular stadium seating. 

Which Seats Are Shaded At Rate Field?

The “shade side” at Rate Field is located on the first base side of the park. Seats along first base line see shade first, followed by seats behind home plate. 

Finding shade at the start of early afternoon games can be difficult. A small roof offers shade to upper rows of the 500 Level, but these seats are a long way from the field. Back rows on the 100 Level are also under an overhang, and these may be the best bet for shade in the early afternoon.

Later in the afternoon, seats on the first base side will have the sun behind them, and seats behind home plate will start to see more shade. Seats at the top of the stadium seat shade first, then the club level and finally the lower deck. 

Choose sections 110-129, 311-330, and 510-528 for the best chance of shade. 

Seats along the third base line and in the outfield will have the most sun, especially in left field sections.

The visiting team dugout is located in front of Lower Level sections 122-127, making these sections popular with visiting fans at Rate Field.

An alternative option can be found in sections 104-105 in front of the visiting team’s bullpen. However, the outfield location means your view of home plate from these seats won’t be the best.

Transportation And Parking At A Chicago White Sox Home Game

Rate Field is located in Chicago’s Armour Square neighborhood at 333 W 35th Street, Chicago, IL 60616, United States. 

You can reach the ballpark on the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/I-94). Heavy traffic is expected around Rate Field on game days, and you should be prepared for street closures and traffic changes. Fans are strongly recommended to use public transportation and rideshare services.

Parking At Rate Field

The ballpark has eight main parking lots which open 2 hours before the start of White Sox games. You are encouraged to pre-book Rate Field parking, as only limited parking spaces may be available on game days.

ADA-accessible parking spaces are available in Lot B, next to Gate 5 on the north side of Rate Field. These spaces are available to visitors with a valid state-issued disability tag or license plate.

Tailgating is permitted in Rate Field parking lots until the game’s scheduled start time. You can only tailgate in your parking space and must ensure that pathways are always kept clear.

Tailgating after the game is not permitted and all parking lots will close around 1 hour after the game ends.

Arriving By Public Transportation

Traveling to Rate Field via public transportation is simple, with several stops for bus routes and the Metra within a short walk of the ballpark. 

Ridesharing Arrangements

The designated area for rideshare drop-offs and pick-ups is located in Lot A on the Wentworth Avenue side of Rate Field. If you are traveling via rideshare, you should use Gate 5 to enter and exit the ballpark.

Rate Field has 7 main gates numbered 1-7. These are located around the field and generally open 90 minutes before the scheduled start of a Chicago White Sox game.
